A Pomodoro timer splits your study time into short focus blocks with breaks in between. This one starts at 25 minutes of focus and 5 minutes of break, and you can change both.

How to use the Pomodoro timer

  1. Set your lengths

Focus starts at 25 minutes and break at 5. Change either one before you start.

  2. Start and focus

Hit Start and work on one thing until the timer runs out. Pause if you really have to. Reset takes you back to a fresh focus block.

  3. Take the break

When focus ends, the timer switches to your break and keeps going. When the break ends, the next focus block starts.

The Pomodoro method

The Pomodoro Technique was created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s and named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used. The classic version: pick one task, work for 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break, and after four rounds take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.

This timer runs the focus and short break cycle for you. For the long break, pause after your fourth focus block and step away for a while.

Making it work for studying

Decide what each block is for before you start, like "finish the practice problems on page 40" or "make flashcards for chapter 3". Keep your phone out of reach. Use the breaks to actually rest: stand up, drink some water, look away from the screen.

If 25 minutes feels too short for deep work like writing, try 50 minutes of focus with a 10 minute break. The best length is the one you can keep up.

Frequently asked questions

Is 25 minutes the best length for a Pomodoro?

It's the classic, not a rule. Some people focus better in 45 or 50 minute blocks. Try a few lengths and keep what works for you.

Does the timer switch to the break by itself?

Yes. When a focus block ends, the break starts automatically, and the next focus block starts after the break.

Does it do long breaks?

It alternates focus with one break length. For a long break after four rounds, pause the timer and take 15 to 30 minutes.

Can I change the times while it's running?

Pause or reset first, then change the focus or break length.

Do I need an account?

No. The timer runs in your browser. No account, nothing to install.
