Weighted grade calculator
Enter each part of your grade with its weight and score. See your current grade and what you need on the rest to hit your target.

Most classes weight homework, quizzes, midterms and the final differently. This grade calculator works out your current weighted grade from the scores you have, and the average you need on everything left to reach your target.
How to calculate your weighted grade
List your grade categories
Each row is one part of your grade: a name, its weight in percent, and your score. It starts with Homework, Midterm and Final. Rename them, change the numbers, or hit Add row for more.
Leave unknown scores blank
If you haven't taken the final yet, leave its score empty. Blank rows count as still to come.
Set your target
Enter the overall grade you're aiming for. You'll see your current grade from the work you have back, and the score you need on the blank rows.
Worked example
The calculator's starting numbers, worked out by hand.
- Your scores
- Homework is 20% of the grade and you got 90. The midterm is 30% and you got 78. The final is 50% and still to come.
- Current grade
- (20 x 90 + 30 x 78) / (20 + 30) = 4,140 / 50 = 82.8%
- Your target
- 85% overall
- What you need on the final
- (85 x 100 - 4,140) / 50 = 4,360 / 50 = 87.2%
The weighted grade formula
Your current grade is each score times its weight, added up, then divided by the total weight of the work you have back:
current grade = (w1 x s1 + w2 x s2 + ...) / (w1 + w2 + ...)
To find what you need on what's left, multiply your target by the total weight of every row, subtract the points you already have, and divide by the weight still to come:
needed = (target x total weight - points so far) / remaining weight
If the answer is over 100%, the calculator tells you the target is impossible at the current weights. If it's below zero, you're already above your target.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade with weights?
Multiply each score by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total of the weights. With homework at 20% (score 90) and a midterm at 30% (score 78), that is 4,140 divided by 50, or 82.8%.
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Enter the grade an A needs in your class (say 90) as the target and leave the final's score blank. The calculator shows the score you need on the final to get there.
Do the weights have to add up to 100?
No. The calculator divides by the total of the weights you enter, so 20, 30 and 50 work the same as 2, 3 and 5.
What if a category has several assignments?
Average the scores in that category first, then enter the average as one row with the category's weight.
What does "impossible at current weights" mean?
You would need more than 100% on the remaining work to hit your target. Try a lower target, or check whether your class offers extra credit.
